How Did Lord Hanuman, forget about his powers?

Hanuman, the Monkey God was one of the most prominent characters in Ramayana and in Hindu Mythology. Hanuman is one of the avatars of Lord Shiva was blessed with an enormous amount of boon and powers by Lord Brahma even during birth. However, surging powers within Hanuman made him a mischievous kid and nobody could tolerate him. Many of these mischiefs done by Hanuman were extremely unfunny and some were unheard of ever. Such was the enthusiasm and uncontrollable excitement that was within the young Hanuman. According to the Vedas, there was one time when Hanuman tried to eat the Sun thinking that it was a yellow fruit. Also, Hanuman being a demi-gold used to go around and tease other gods and sages when he was bored.

Hanuman had a habit of wandering into forests where many ascetic sages were meditating and were in complete silence. Whenever hanuman visited the forest, his purposeful noisy stomping were a trouble to the ascetic sages who were deep in their meditation. Though this was in many ways a trouble to the sages, they tried to keep their thoughts to themselves. However, Hanuman never let these chances to get more mischievous. He would do anything and everything to get the sages to open their eyes and end their meditation. During the Havan Kund, the young Hanuman used to douse the fire that was built by the sages, eat their food and tear apart the cleaned linen. Hanuman also resorted to more mischiefs like when the sage slips into deep meditation, the monkey kid would tug at the beard of the sages until they were disturbed by it and awoke from the meditation. Such was the extent of the mischiefs of Hanuman and things were spiraling out of control very soon.

When the Brahmins came to the realization that Hanuman would not let them meditate in peace and finish their penance, they took the issue seriously and wanted Hanuman to be punished for his wrongdoings. When the decision was made, the Brahmins went to Lord Brahma to tell him that Hanuman’s powers have gone out of his control and they needed measures to control him. As more and more Brahmins began complaining and also said that other Devatas could not meditate because of Hanuman, Lord Brahma came to a decision to curb Hanuman.

Many of the great gods began to worry that as Hanuman was destined to be the savior of the world, it is important for him to not lose his powers and not be able to control it. Some of the great sages who were born into the families of Bhrigu and Angira, known for never losing their temper became furious in connection with Hanuman playing around with sages and cursed him. The curse was as such that Hanuman forget his powers and lead a normal life of an ordinary human being. Hanuman would only get his powers when the time was right for him to take the lead.

According to this curse, as kismat would have it, Hanuman was only remained of his powers during Ramayana when Lord Ram was preparing to go save his wife Sita from the clutches of Ravana in Lanka. Hanuman would then regain his powers and go to Lanka to help Lord Ram and destroy Lanka.
